The time that is considered to be equivalent with present day Indian movie industry began in 1970s when the Bollywood movies became a favored mode of entertainment for the general public and that trend continues today in the new Indian movie industry. Although few directors such as Govind Nihilani and Shyam Benegal persisted in making artistic movies, the total number of mainstream movies produced was far greater than the artistic ones.

The impact of commercial cinema kept on increasing in 1980s and 1990s. Many movies in 1980s like Chandni, Kayamat se Kayamat Tak, Maine Pyar Kiya and Tezaab, and movies in 1990s such as Baazigar and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge were young love stories and went on to become great hits. These romantic movies were generally about love between a young couple and mostly had happy ends. Several of these romantic movies were commercial successes and have many box office records to their credit.

The trend of making love stories continued in the latter part of 1990s and early part of 2000s with hit love stories such as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Interestingly, the art cinema re-emerged by late 1990s as many movies including Chandni Bar, Traffic Signal and Satya received good critic reviews. Such new Indian movies were a welcome change from the love stories that were being released every Friday and had a strong impact on the Bollywood movie fans.

Numerous movies with large budgets including Veer and Mein aur Mrs Khanna were not well received, and unexpectedly, DevD and other small budget movies have done well. This has lead to fresh and unique stories being favored among the Bollywood producers and directors.

The latest trend in the Indian cinema is experimentation with the subject matter of the story. Newer movies like My Name Is Khan and 3 Idiots had fresh narratives and have been huge successes at the box office. The modern Bollywood movies are bringing an innovative approach to movie making which is appreciated by the huge number of viewers of Bollywood movies.
