In the past few years, the Hindi film industry has made a paradigm move from churning out commercial masala movies to making serious movies that are characterized by bold experimentations in methods, themes and story line. This can be easily noted in the currently running and upcoming Bollywood movies.

It is no longer possible to distinguish the commercial movies from the so called artistic movies. Recent Hindi movies that have hit the theatres are more realistic and have better quality cinematography, direction and editing. A number of talented directors are now proving their talent and affecting audience preferences by their revolutionary films.

The story lines of a lot of the latest and upcoming Bollywood movies including 3 Idiots, Wake Up Sid and Well Done Abba are related to the problems and life problems of an ordinary man. The current directors have been making movies on the storyline of a common man rebelling against terrorism and life issues in general.

Another visible trend is that quite a few movies like Love Story-2050, Krrish and Drona have put to test the world class technology and graphics to create a scintillating effect. Animation films are also becoming quite well known, and even big production houses like Yash Raj Films are venturing into this genre.

Yet another trend that has resulted in fortunes for producers is the remake of old classics.. Some of the latest remakes to reach the audience are RGV ki Aag a remake of Sholay and Don remake of Amitabh’s blockbuster of the 70s.

Today, a lot of movies are made keeping in mind the taste and likes of the city audience. Movies like Life in a Metro, Page3, Company and Fashion that target a niche section of movie goers – the urban-metropolitan section of viewers – are also proving to be good money spinners.

Another noticeable change is that some production houses in Bollywood have been churning out several movies in one year. Also interestingly, many of the movies are being co-produced nowadays.

Lastly, a very important change in the Bollywood cinema has been its growing popularity beyond India and the increase in demand of the bigger Hindi movies. A large number of the Indians who are now residing abroad still want to see Hindi movies and it is conjectured that soon Hindi movies will be competing with the Hollywood flicks in global markets.
