Some young Bollywood stars stay in the news more for their love life than their movie achievements. Deepika Padukone, who shot to fame with ‘Om Shanti Om’ and is starring in quite a few upcoming Hindi movies, is always discussed in the media for her link ups with fellow actors, dashing cricketers or millionaire heirs.
Katrina Kaif is another, born under a lucky star, as the actress’s movies have all been hits despite her obvious lack of acting talent. Thanks to Salman Khan’s ‘support’, she managed to get lead roles with good banners and is currently the top actress in Bollywood. At the moment though, her break-up with the hot headed Khan is making news. Before this, her alleged ‘close friendship’ with Ranbir Kapoor was a much-discussed topic.

Those of you who have seen the trailer of one of the upcoming Bollywood movies ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ will know that the movie has been shot entirely in the United States. ‘Piggy chops’ Priyanka Chopra and dashing Ranbir Kapoor look cute as a pair.
Touted as a ‘love story between strangers’, the trailer looks interesting. In fact, it has become one of the most-watched trailers on the internet. Directed by Siddharth Anand of ‘Salaam Namaste’ fame, the movie is set for a Sept 24 release.
Music by talented duo Vishal-Shekhar sounds promising. The song ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ has already become quite popular. The movie also stars Zayed Kapoor as Priyanka Chopra’s husband.

One of the upcoming Hindi movies is the Shahid Kapoor starrer ‘Mausam’. Shahid, who plays an airforce officer in it, flew the combat aircraft Tornado at Edinburgh airbase. Director (and daddy) Pankaj Kapur wanted to add authenticity to the scenes and had to pull a lot of strings to shoot at the restricted Royal Air Force base. Shahid underwent training lessons before embarking on the flying adventure. The rest of the movie scenes involving planes will be shot at Hyderabad’s airforce base.
Shahid has sported a new look for this movie, growing a mustache (a far cry from his clean shaven chocolate boy looks) to fit in better in his role. ‘Mausam’ also stars Sonam Kapoor.

Leggy lass Deepika Padukone literally and figuratively towers above her contemporaries. They say models can’t act- John Abraham and Aishwarya Rai (this one’s debatable) are wooden and over-the-top respectively but big stars in Bollywood. Padukone on the other hand, is a natural performer. Watch her in early Close-Up and Levis Strauss ads-she emotes with her eyes and her expressions are spot-on. Om Shanti Om was a dream debut where she made an impact with her not-so-big role. Karthik Calling Karthik saw her in a different avatar, one she carried off with ease. Upcoming movies Lafangey Parindey and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se could further solidify her position as the best young actress in Bollywood.

Bollywood awards are losing their relevance and are nothing more than watching the stars perform, delivering acceptance speeches and taking red carpet photos. The entire film fraternity attending the functions is necessarily not under the impression that the best actor or film will be awarded. However, the consensus after the award function seems to be that it is nice to see the deserving actor or film bagging the prize.
Aamir Khan is one of the few actors who have spoken openly regarding this issue. He has been boycotting award ceremonies since a long time as the power, money and influence has eroded the credibility of the bollywood awards. Awards have lost their sole purpose of recognising the outstanding performer and promoting the country’s talent. Most of the awardees are the ones who are in good terms with the sponsors and who can lobby best in the domain of the organisers. Not all awards are going to the legitimate owners and also they are not in sync with the expectations of the audiences. The need of the hour is that apart from portraying glamour and flamboyance, awards should promote enterprise and honour effort, thereby working towards advancing the interests of mankind.

Dadasaheb Phalke’s Raja Harishchandra, a silent film released in 1913, marks the beginning of the history of Bollywood, as Mumbai’s huge movie industry is often referred to. After the roaring success of the movie, a creative bunch of people stepped into movie making in Mumbai. The next major film was Alam Ara; in 1931, which was the first movie made in India with sound, and Kisan Kanya, which was the first colour film in Hindi.
Films that came out of Bollywood during the 1940s were usually escapist fantasies, owing to the grim socio political conditions that were brought about by the independence movement, which coincided with World War II. But, relevant social issues were also showed on screen, and Achhut Kanya that told the tale of the struggles of a Dalit girl was released, besides an array of films of patriotic fervour like Shaheed.
Poverty in the villages of India and undying family values were depicted with unflinching realism in Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957). During the same period, legendary actor and director Raj Kapoor made two immortal classics - Awara and Shree 420 - and director Guru Dutt also gifted the audience such timeless classics as Pyaasa. Mughal-E-Azam (1960) was an epic on celluloid that brought the Mughal era on the Indian screen like never before.
Cine stars like Dev Anand; and nargis became household names, and the entire nation was enthralled by the music of SD Burman and OP Nayyar. Singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi ruled the hearts of the Indian masses during the 1950s and 60s with their melodious songs.
In the swinging 60s, Indian Elvis Shammi Kapoor mesmerized audiences with his dance and acting. The 70s was a decade for Amitabh Bachchan with his characters involved in a fight against social and political injustice. The action genre continued into the 1980s, until the release of Qayamat se Qayamat Tak in 1988, which set the trend for sweet romantic movies in Bollywood that has continued even in the latest bollywood movies. But Bollywood today has a highly advanced industry, producing movies that often get wide acclaim from all over the world.

Two of the most keenly awaited movies of recent time are about to be released, Gajini and Rab ne Bana di jodi. Rab ne bana di jodi should be an important test for Shahrukh and his current standing in bollywood. Recently a string of big successes for Akshay Kumar has made may question whether Shahrukh is still the undisputed king of Bollywood. Looking at the role it seems this might be new territory for Shahrukh, and it remains to be seen how he will cope with a much less glamorous image and will he get a thumbs up from the masses. Somehow it seems Aamir might pull off Ghajini much better, but Asin is a new face for Hindi audiences and though she is good looking, she is not the typical sizzling bollywood beauty and a lot of focus will be on her acting.
