Dadasaheb Phalke’s Raja Harishchandra, a silent film released in 1913, marks the beginning of the history of Bollywood, as Mumbai’s huge movie industry is often referred to. After the roaring success of the movie, a creative bunch of people stepped into movie making in Mumbai. The next major film was Alam Ara; in 1931, which was the first movie made in India with sound, and Kisan Kanya, which was the first colour film in Hindi.
Films that came out of Bollywood during the 1940s were usually escapist fantasies, owing to the grim socio political conditions that were brought about by the independence movement, which coincided with World War II. But, relevant social issues were also showed on screen, and Achhut Kanya that told the tale of the struggles of a Dalit girl was released, besides an array of films of patriotic fervour like Shaheed.
Poverty in the villages of India and undying family values were depicted with unflinching realism in Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957). During the same period, legendary actor and director Raj Kapoor made two immortal classics - Awara and Shree 420 - and director Guru Dutt also gifted the audience such timeless classics as Pyaasa. Mughal-E-Azam (1960) was an epic on celluloid that brought the Mughal era on the Indian screen like never before.
Cine stars like Dev Anand; and nargis became household names, and the entire nation was enthralled by the music of SD Burman and OP Nayyar. Singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi ruled the hearts of the Indian masses during the 1950s and 60s with their melodious songs.
In the swinging 60s, Indian Elvis Shammi Kapoor mesmerized audiences with his dance and acting. The 70s was a decade for Amitabh Bachchan with his characters involved in a fight against social and political injustice. The action genre continued into the 1980s, until the release of Qayamat se Qayamat Tak in 1988, which set the trend for sweet romantic movies in Bollywood that has continued even in the latest bollywood movies. But Bollywood today has a highly advanced industry, producing movies that often get wide acclaim from all over the world.

Two of the most keenly awaited movies of recent time are about to be released, Gajini and Rab ne Bana di jodi. Rab ne bana di jodi should be an important test for Shahrukh and his current standing in bollywood. Recently a string of big successes for Akshay Kumar has made may question whether Shahrukh is still the undisputed king of Bollywood. Looking at the role it seems this might be new territory for Shahrukh, and it remains to be seen how he will cope with a much less glamorous image and will he get a thumbs up from the masses. Somehow it seems Aamir might pull off Ghajini much better, but Asin is a new face for Hindi audiences and though she is good looking, she is not the typical sizzling bollywood beauty and a lot of focus will be on her acting.
